A cat will be able to come along on a road trip when using the right traveling gear and safety tips.

Cat owners love spending time with their cats which makes traveling away from a cat difficult for both the cat and owner. Traveling gear and safety precautions are available to make car trips with a cat very enjoyable.

Traveling Gear for Cats

Traveling gear for a cat consists of:

  • Cat Carriers
  • Cat Harnesses and Leashes
  • Pet Barriers
  • Litter Box
  • Food and Water Dishes

Pet specialty stores offer many different types of cat carriers - plastic, cloth, strollers, etc. A carrier needs to be lined with newspaper or training pads just in case a cat gets ill along the ride.

Cat harnesses are much easier to attach a leash to than a collar. A cat can slip out of a collar but it can't escape a harness. Being walked around with a harness and leash can take some getting used to for a cat, especially if it was not trained as a kitten to do so.

Pet barriers for vehicles are mesh walls that divide a certain part of the vehicle for a cat. A cat is a curious creature so if a cat carrier is not an option than a pet barrier needs to be applied.

Safe Traveling Tips for Cats

Traveling with a cat can sometimes be very difficult. Certain steps will help the ride go along smoothly for you and your cat.

  • A cat needs to take short trips before long trips to get used to the vehicle and the owner's driving. This is also a step for the cat's owner because short trips will allow the owner to see how the cat reacts mentally and physically.
  • The travel safety gear needs to be tested to make sure it works well with the cat.
  • Before a long car trip, a cat needs to get used to a harness and leash so a cat won't be intimidated or humiliated by being walked at rest stops.
  • A cat carrier will ensure more safety than a pet barrier for some but process of elimination will work in finding out what best fits your cat.
  • Rest stops are very important to a cat's health while traveling. Food and water need to be given at the rest stops and the cat needs to have access to the litter box. Dehydration can cause serious health issues in a cat but motion sickness can occur as well which is why after a cat eats, an owner needs to give the cat time to digest its food.
  • Lining the bottom of the carrier will make for an easy clean-up in case motion sickness does occur.

Further Traveling Information

Daily medicine that a cat is on cannot be forgotten during trips. A veterinarian needs to be consulted if a cat has certain illnesses that could affect how it reacts in a car.

A cat should not be left alone in a vehicle. Being left alone can cause stress and nervousness which is bad for the cat's heart and health. Weather is another big reason not to leave a cat alone in a vehicle.
