One of the main aspects of camping is the food. Hot dogs and marshmallows on a stick are just the beginning of what all can be cooked over an open fire.

Cooking food is one of the most enjoyed camping traditions. Many breakfast, dinner and dessert foods can be cooked on an open fire.

Breakfast Camping Foods

  • Biscuits and Gravy:

  1. Stack the firewood into a teepee style so that a large pan will fit. Ingredients are pre-cut biscuit dough, flour, milk, salt, pepper and butter.
  2. Start out by cooking the biscuits. Once the biscuits are done remove pan from fire and remove the biscuits from the pan.
  3. Replace the empty pan to the open fire. Add one tablespoon of flour and one tablespoon of butter, a one to one ratio, to the pan. Use a fork to combine the melted butter to the flour. Once the two ingredients are combined and a light brown color (about ten minutes) then add one splash of milk at a time while stirring until the gravy is the right consistency.
  4. Add salt and pepper to desired taste and serve over buttered biscuits.

  • Breakfast Burrito:

  1. Ingredients are flour tortillas, eggs, sausage and/or bacon, milk, cheese, salt and pepper.
  2. Place a pan over the open fire and let heat. Meanwhile, mix the eggs, milk, cheese, salt and pepper together.
  3. Once the pan is warm start cooking the sausage and/or bacon and remove when done. Immediately after removing the sausage and/or bacon add the egg mixture. Use a spatula to scramble eggs. When the scrambled eggs are done, remove from pan and place on an open tortilla shell with the meat and shredded cheese on top.
  4. Roll the tortilla burrito style around the meat and eggs.
Dinner Camping Foods

  • Hot Dogs:

  1. The fire needs to be going strong before cooking a hot dog. Metal prongs or sticks can be used to cook hot dogs.
  2. The prongs can be sanitized by placing on open flame for a few minutes.
  3. Holding one side of the hot dog over a flame at a time and rotating is the simplest way to cook it.
  4. The hot dog will be very hot when done so using the bun to remove it from the prongs will eliminate the chance of fingers getting burnt.

  • Vegetable Platter:

  1. Start out with a large piece of foil. Form foil into a platter with enough foil left over to cover the top.
  2. Add four potatoes, two squash and two zucchini all being cubed. Add about four tablespoons of butter and salt and pepper.
  3. Close the tin foil around the vegetables and cook over campfire for about 20 to 30 minutes or until cooked and serve.
Dessert Camping Foods

  • Smores:

  1. Smores consist of marshmallows, gram crackers and chocolate.
  2. Marshmallows can be poked with sticks or cooking prongs. After the marshmallow is done to liking add a piece of chocolate to a gram cracker and the marshmallow on top of the chocolate.
  3. Add another piece of chocolate to the top of the marshmallow and then a gram cracker to the top of the chocolate - this makes a type of smore sandwich.
The great thing about camping is being able to cook and eat whatever one desires. Ingredients can be added or removed to the above recipes to fit any camper's cooking style.

We make biscuits and gravy on the fire quite often, they are great. I have never tried the veggie pack you list but it sounds good. You may want to check out some of our favorites at http://www.campingmadeeasier.com/recipes.php Thanks for the recipes!
